“Form follows function” – Louis Sullivan, Architect (1856-1924)

New Bold Design Limited is an architectural design and project management consultancy, led by the Director, Philip Newbold, which draws on over 40 years’ experience in the public and private sectors encompassing all types of design and construction projects for a wide variety of Clients

Company History

New Bold Design Limited was incorporated in April 1999 to provide architectural services to Architects in the North East of England. It was originally set up to enable Philip to work as a Senior Architectural Technician as a contractor for Dewjo’c Architects in Stockton-on-Tees. In April 2000 trading was suspended when Philip took up a salaried position with Dewjo’c and subsequently as a Senior Associate. More recently, Dewjo’c Architects has merged with Devereux Architects and Philip left Devereux at the end of January 2011 to re-launch New Bold Design Limited on 1 February 2011

Company Ethos

The company does not use aircraft and the Director does not eat meat. We take the concept of one planet living, energy conservation and a sustainable lifestyle very seriously and this feeds through into the design of all our building projects, their impact on the environment and their running costs

In order to avoid the need for commuting, Philip works from home in the only EPC Band A building in County Durham, Greendale Cottage

In addition to a full range of mainstream architectural services we specialise in three main areas of building design :-

Accessible Design

For the last twenty years or so Philip has developed his knowledge and experience in the design of buildings for people with disabilities, both in large scale multiple-user projects for commercial Clients and in domestic projects for individual Clients

As a Senior Associate at Devereux Architects he was the “Accessible Design Champion” advising colleagues on the DDA and corresponding compliance with the relevant regulations. He is also able to draw on expert advice from his partner, Joy Newbold, who is a retired Nurse Manager specialising in Learning Disabilities and Supported Living

Sustainable Design

For the last ten years or so Philip has taken an increasing interest in low-energy building technologies and energy conservation. Inspired by his former colleague at Devereux Architects, Mark Siddall, he has qualified as a Certified Passivhaus Consultant

This enables New Bold Design to offer advice and design services on sustainable building techniques as well as on-site services to Contractors. We are not experts in renewable technologies but we know people who are, once the insulation and air-tightness credentials of the building fabric have been optimised

Conservation Design

Throughout his long career, Philip has been involved in projects which recycle old buildings, either by adapting or extending them for a new purpose or to extend their life while meeting modern regulations. Listed Buildings require a sympathetic treatment

Applying the same carefully considered standards of design and construction to everything from modest domestic extensions to major new build projects and multi-million pound Listed Building conversions, we bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to any conservation or restoration project
