• Disabled adaptations and remodelling of two bungalows into one home

This project involved the conversion of two semi-detached bungalows into one accessible property. The bungalows and their integral garages presented a number of challenges including four different floor levels and three different facing bricks. The layout of both properties was cramped, with small rooms and narrow doors plus there were two separate, outdated heating and electrical systems

Before the adaptation project, the grounds comprised a long, tarmac driveway and concrete parking area with a large lawn to the front and small shrub beds and flagged paths to the rear. There was also large timber summer house (derelict) and hot tub at the rear which were both removed. The access into the properties and circulation around them was unsuitable for a wheelchair user

The construction phase of the project was started in January 2017 and was completed in April 2017

The properties were purchased for a client who had been paralysed from the waist down in an accident. She had spent several years in temporary accommodation and was awarded insurance damages which enabled a project to be developed to provide her with her own accessible home plus accommodation for up to two live-in carers. Both properties were in poor condition

A new internal opening was formed to join the two properties together and floor levels were all adjusted to achieve one level throughout. Contrasting render was used to disguise the external alterations and to cover some of the different facing bricks. Vehicular and pedestrian access has been improved by replacing the concrete parking area and flagged paths and patios with new concrete block paving providing continuous wheelchair access throughout the site

The layout has been extensively remodelled to make almost all of the property wheelchair accessible with the removal of internal walls and widening of doors. The new Main Bedroom features a large, en-suite, accessible Bathroom / Shower & WC with ceiling track hoisting between the rooms. A new Physiotherapy Room has been provided for the client’s special equipment for exercise and massage and this room also provides ceiling track hoisting for transfer between pieces of equipment

Internal walls were also removed to produce an open plan Kitchen / Breakfast Room layout with standard kitchen units and an accessible, mobile island. The new layout also incorporates a spacious Entrance Hall (with ceiling track hoisting), Dining Room, Lounge, Quiet Room and a Utility Room

In addition to the main accommodation for the client extending across the floor area of one of the original bungalows, most of the second bungalow was remodelled to provide two carer’s bedrooms with a shared en-suite Shower & WC plus a Guest Bedroom with en-suite Shower & WC. This part of the home has a separate external entrance for carers and guests and an internal link door

The energy conservation measures include new roof insulation, triple-glazed windows and external doors plus a new, gas-fired boiler. All lighting has been replaced with LED fittings. The EPC rating is now Band C. All external door openings are min 900mm wide and have a level threshold
