In March 2003, New Bold Design were commissioned by The Trustees of Hutton Rudby Village Hall to look into the feasibility of refurbishing their existing Village Hall in a Conservation Area after a Heritage Lottery bid to fund a new building had failed. Use of the Hall by the local community was dwindling and the structure of the main hall was being prevented from collapse by temporary buttresses to the external walls. Accessibility for disabled people, the elderly and parents with young children was restricted by changes in level and internal circulation was poor. The toilets needed modernisation and storage, particularly for the Drama Society, was totally inadequate

After extensive community consultation, input from the various user groups, protracted discussions with Planning and some inventive fund-raising initiatives, the Hall was closed in March 2004 and the £450k re-development commenced with the felling of the mature sycamore tree that had caused the structural problems with the main hall walls. Partial demolition and extensive internal remodelling of the existing building was followed by a rear extension to the Johnson Room, a new Garden Room and reconstruction of the main hall with steel portal frames

Side extensions to the Hall provided storage facilities on one side and new toilets and entrance foyer on the other. Finally, the car park was extended to provide accessible parking and the rear play area landscaped

In order to address the shortcomings of the original Hall and to ensure a viable future for the completed building, the project placed prominent emphasis on accessible and sustainable design with level access through wide doors throughout the building and high levels of insulation and air-tightness in the building fabric. The heating system has been upgraded and is now supplemented by air-source heat-pumps. Carefully controlled mechanical ventilation systems serve the four main rooms with low-energy lighting and IT cabling installed throughout

The new Hall was officially opened in 2005 by actress Wendy Craig, a childhood user of the original building, and community use of the Hall continues to increase with new groups bringing a wide variety of accessible uses
